Why self employment is becoming more popular

The number of people in self-employment continues to rise. In the first quarter of 2016, it was reported that there were 4.7 million self-employed workers, which accounts for 15% of the workforce.

The vast majority of those choosing to become self-employed are doing so for positive reasons such as they believe it suits their skills or abilities, they had an idea that they wanted to try out or they wanted to gain recognition and a sense of achievement.

However, some people are forced to start their own business, which are so-called “necessity entrepreneurs”. Reasons for this include a lack of alternatives or negative factors, such as a lack of job satisfaction, job insecurity or limited earnings.

One common factor of people who start their own business is that they want to gain more independence and be in charge of their own destiny.

Becoming self-employed can be an exciting but scary time. We recommend that if you are thinking about taking the plunge, that you first take a look at the things to consider before starting a business.
